Celebrating 20 years of King-Cat, John Porcellino takes to the road on an extensive tour. He's already done a couple of dates including SPX (a show he hasn't been to in 10 years!!) John is one of the single most important cartoonists working today (there, I said it) both in influence and achievement so you should really take advantage of these rare opportunities to meet him. He is a surprisingly affable and jocular fellow given the somber tone of much of his work. Also, he is an expert on late 20th Century Middle American Rock Music (Soul Asylum, Husker Du, The Replacements!!)

SPX is not the only book fair that D&Q will be attending this weekend - if you're anywhere in or near Toronto, come by and visit us this Sunday (Sept 27th) at Word On The Street. The man with the intent stare above is none other than Chester Brown and he'll be signing copies of Louis Riel, along with his classics I Never Liked You, The Playboy, and The Little Man. Also on board will be editor and writer Brad Mackay, signing copies of The Collected Doug Wright. 11 through 6 pm, outdoors in Queen's Park.

 NYC is abuzz with excitement over R.O. Blechman and R. Sikoryak joint presentation of their new D+Q books at the Strand this Thursday night at 7 PM. Both R. and R.O. will be presenting slide shows, taking questions and signing the night away. Don't miss this event! The Voice recommends the event by the two "talented satirists" as does the New Yorker. AMNY called Sikoryak "king of the cartoon mash-ups."
Need more convincing than that? Well, Steven Heller chose Blechman's Talking Lines last week to talk about in his Daily Heller column at Print Magazine where he puts it all out in the open "All of [Blechman's] books are a joy, but the bottom line: This one is exceptional." And there are two interviews with Sikoryak, check them out! The NY Daily News and Publishers Weekly.

Do I even need to hype this book? John Porcellino has been doing King-Cat Comics and Stories for twenty years now. Map of My Heart is his fourth book collection and some might argue that this is the nut of it all. Collecting issues 51-61, this book shows an artist fully in control of intent and content and I think it's fair to say that these are the comics that cemented John's reputation as a great comics auteur. This book will be shipping to your store very very soon. And John will be visiting your city very, very soon!

Eagle-eyed comics scholar and friend of Drawn and Quarterly Jeet Heer has a lovely little piece on the Comics Comics blog in which he points out a curiously serendipitous connection between Drawn & Quarterly artist Seth and renowned 1960s kids' comics creator John Stanley. Of course, as any astute fan already knows, Seth is designing the John Stanley Library, an ongoing series of books published by Drawn & Quarterly collecting a selection of work from Stanley's heyday.
Speaking of the John Stanley Library, the newest volume hits shelves this week to much fanfare and anticipation! Nancy Volume 1 is the first in a series collecting Stanley's interpretation of the beloved Ernie Bushmiller character.

R.O. Blechman has enjoyed an almost "Zelig" like career for much of the past 60 years and reading his bio makes you wonder how all of this could possibly have fit into one lifetime.
This is the short version:
His first book, The Juggler of Our Lady, was published in 1953 to widespread acclaim and it was later made into an animated film (with narration by Boris Karloff). When Harvey Kurtzman launched Humbug in 1957, Blechman was on board for every issue of the seminal magazine. Blechman's career then veered into advertising and he went on to create some of the most successful television commercials of the 1960s (including this one with a Gene Wilder voice-over).
When Buckminster Fuller's United States Pavilion opened at Expo 67, there was Blechman, with several large murals on display. Sesame Street launched in 1969 and changed children's entertainment forever - Blechman was on board for that too (of course), with a number of animated shorts. I recently came across old issues of National Lampoon from its heydey in the early 1970s and I was reminded again how funny they were - well, Blechman was in there too.
It should probably go without saying that he's had his share of New Yorker covers (14) and New York Times pieces (too many to count), but has any other artist had the distinction of illustrating every single cover of a magazine? I would wager that that singular achievement belongs to Blechman, whose artwork graced each cover of Story magazine from 1989 to 2000. Did I mention that throughout this time, Blechman was also operating his own animation studio, The Ink Tank? It was a successful company for nearly 30 years (he won an Emmy Award in 1984 for one of his films) and his work for The Ink Tank was honored with a retrospective at The Museum of Modern Art in 2003.
A single book couldn't possibly cover all of Blechman's achievements, so we chose to focus on only one important facet of his half-century career. Talking Lines collects his comics from his first Humbug pieces in 1957 to a New York Times Op-Ed piece from just a few months ago - it debuts this weekend at The Brooklyn Book Festival, where Mr. Blechman will be signing at the D+Q booth.

We had a great event at the store this past Saturday for the Indie Rock Colouring Book. Rocking out to the tunes of Murray Lightburn of the Dears were Elliot Lesenko-Oliveros (clad in a Center for Cartoon Studies shirt), Charles Lesenko-Oliveros (always rocking the spiderman) and Georgie Devlin. After the tunes, paper was rolled out on the stage and the kids started a colouring jam. More here.

The modern master of written satire weighs in on comics satire, a high compliment indeed. The AV Club states of Masterpiece Comics, "superbly crafted, sublimely conceptual strips that combine classic cartoons and superheroes with classic literature" and of Talking Lines "there are few cartoonists better at injecting the full range of human emotion into a cramped, unsteady line."

I wasn't going to share this but when Peg saw how excited Chris, Rebecca, and I (the production side of the office) were she said, "you nerds need to share that with your peeps." {It's the cover to Thirteen Going on Eighteen #10 although it is marked #8. My assumption is that the joke was moved to better reflect the season of publication.}

Here's a neat little article in the Chicago edition of the Onion AV Club, it's a guide to Chicago comic shops where curiously Quimbys is left out though they do include Chicago Comics, Comix Revolution, Graham Crackers and Third Coast, so enough of me complaining, especially when Comix Revolution displays their exquisite taste in comics by suggesting George Sprott to readers and that Third Coast has a Tuesday night knitting club!!! Between this and yesterday's post about Ware's Granta cover (and the president, natch), I am getting all misty eyed for Chicago and starting to think about bumping the chief aside and going to the Printers Row next June myself.

The date says September 2nd, but it also states the article is in the Magazine, so I assume the hard copy will be out this Sunday. Whenever it is, you can see at least a DOZEN (!!!!!!) panels and strips online at the Times. Oh yes, I should mention that the article is about the economy, but really who will be reading the article when there are Jason Lutes comics on the same page?

What follows two starred reviews and a shout out in Rolling Stone? A love letter from NPR, of course. Congrats to R. Sikoryak for this amazing review in the Books We Like column on NPR! Reviewer Glen Weldon sums up his review by stating "Masterpiece Comics is an impressively diverse collection of Sikoryak's clever, distinctive and ultimately illuminating work; it reads like the assigned textbook for the coolest Great Books survey course of all time." This review is a must read!

Came to work today to find two emails from Miriam Katin saying she just got back from Finland and snapped a few Moomin photos over there, apparently the sight of Moomin greeted her all over Finland. Whatta sweetie! This reminds me of two things 1) that our new book THE BOOK ABOUT MOOMIN, MYMBLE AND LITTLE MY will be hitting shelves in mid-October (sneaky comics connection that Peter Blegvad did the lettering) and that Miriam will be at D+Q's 20th Anniversary party at Rocketship next week!

The Fall issue of Granta will be out On September 22nd and is devoted to Chicago! Very appropriately, the editors asked Chris Ware to do the cover.

Our final summer intern, Laura Terry, ended her tenure here yesterday. I think the end of the summer makes us all a little teary-eyed as does the departure of someone who you have come to think of as family. God, I'm getting all choked up here. Why do they keep leaving??
So on Laura's second to last day we went down to the converted shipping container that is now a lobster roll truck. I, of course, forgot to make sure that Laura's dietary restrictions were accounted for so she just had a fizzy water. THE LOBSTER ROLLS WERE DELICIOUS! {See you in White River Junction, Laura.}
**Peggy's Note** How do we welcome and say thanks to a great intern? By making sure that any special event we invite them to, they can't enjoy the food. Poor Laura's first event was the D+Q Fête des Fromages and the last one was a trip for Lobster Rolls! We're sorry Laura, thanks for being a great sport!
