Chris Ware Exhibit: Drawings For New York Periodicals
Updated January 29, 2008
CHRIS WARE Drawings for New York Periodicals February 1 - March 15, 2008 Opening Reception: Friday, February 1st, 6-8 PM
Adam Baumgold Gallery presents a recent series of original comic drawings by Chris Ware Drawings For New York Periodicals, from February 1 through March 15, 2008. The 40 drawings in the exhibition include the complete 30 weekly drawings comprising one chapter of the in-progress book “Building Stories” which inaugurated the “Funny Pages” in The New York Times Sunday magazine in 2005. In addition, the exhibition will feature the four different Thanksgiving cover drawings that were published simultaneously by The New Yorker in 2006 as well as the fifth cover that was released only online by The New Yorker. Other drawings by Chris Ware done specifically for the New Yorker will also appear in the exhibition.
The 30 “Building Stories” drawings focus on one day, one hour each, in the lives of the inhabitants of the three floors of a Chicago apartment building. Their thoughts, ambitions, day dreams, second guesses, and real-life interactions are scrutinized and in some cases amplified into seemingly monumental events.
The drawings for The New Yorker Thanksgiving issue combine scenes from the present and the past that comment on holidays, sustenance and war. Chris Ware was born in Omaha, Nebraska in 1967. He is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin and also attended The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He is the author of "Jimmy Corrigan – the Smartest Kid on Earth" (Pantheon Books, 2000) which received the Guardian First Book Award in 2001 and the American Book Award in 2000. His is also the author of the irregular periodical “The Acme Novelty Library” (Volume #1 - #18) Chris Ware’s books “Quimby the Mouse” and "The ACME Novelty Datebook" (Volume 1), were released in 2003 and in 2004. He was the recipient of the Eisner and Harvey Comic book awards, in 1994 and 2004, the "L'Alph Art" award in 2003, and a United States Artists "Hoi" Fellowship in 2007.
Chris Ware’s “The ACME Novelty Library #18” (“Building Stories”) and "The ACME Novelty Datebook" (Volume Two) as well as the portfolio of prints related to The New Yorker Thanksgiving covers (“The ACME Novelty Library #18.5”) all were released in late 2007.
Chris Ware’s work was included in the Whitney Biennial in 2002, as well as in the traveling exhibition MASTERS of American Comics in 2005-6 that opened at MOCA and the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles. Chris Ware had a retrospective exhibition at The Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago in 2006, and in 2007 at the Sheldon Memorial Gallery in Lincoln, Nebraska. Chris Ware lives and works in Oak Park, Illinois.
The gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday 11:00 to 5:30 P.M. For additional information please contact Adam Baumgold at (212)861-7338 or at abaumgold@aol.com. A preview of the exhibition can be viewed at adambaumgoldgallery

An evening with James Sturm: Thursday, October 11
Updated October 3, 2007
His new book, modestly titled James Sturm's America, has just been published. The book is the definitive collection of his American history stories.
Please stop by Elixir located in White River Junction at 188 S. Main Street (802.281-7009). The signing is from 6-8pm but if enough people buy James a drink he may be there longer (luckily he lives within walking distance)! He'll have his pens on hand and will adorn your book with some original artwork. If you haven't been to Elixir it's worth checking out, it's a swank tapas/martini bar in the beautifully refurbished freight house.
The wonderfully independently owned Norwich Bookstore will be on hand to sell the books. And, if you want to buy a signed book but can not make it Thursday night, call the Norwich Bookstore (802-649-1114) and reserve a copy. He will happily inscribe it for you.
ps: Blurbs!
"Original and fascinating." -- Garry Trudeau
"James Sturm's graphic narratives make us re-imagine our shared history. This is historical fiction at its best." -- Russell Banks
"Sturm's AMERICA is the one glimpsed through the holes in the flag: rooted, grim and enduring. His line of his drawings has a pure grain like that of the voice in William Carlos Williams' epic poem PATERSON, or the singers on Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music. Fables like these are an antidote to cultural amnesia." -- Jonathan Lethem

In fact, this is a class that works especially well for 'non-writers' like bartenders, janitors, office workers, hairdressers and anyone who has given up on 'being a writer' but still wonders what it might be like to write. Open to ALL PEOPLE!
Lynda teaches a specific way of working she learned from her teacher, Marilyn Frasca, in the late 1970's and has used ever since. She says it will work for anyone who has any kind of curiosity about writing or remembering -- especially people who have always wanted to write but have no idea how to even begin.
BE ADVISED! IT'S GOING TO BE TWO DAYS OF INTENSE CONCENTRATION AND HARD WORK! It is not jive! It is for real! (It is also pretty fun too, but not necessarily in a social way!)
Can you dig that? If so, we can dig YOU! All you'll need is about 100 sheets of notebook paper, a three-ring binder (no other kind of paper set-up will work for this class) and a couple of your favorite pens. All students must figure out their own transportation and lodging. We'll tell you where the classroom is located and all other details when we confirm your reservation!
Come to Chicago! Come to Lynda's writing class! Class monitor Kelly Hogan describes the class as a way to "Blow your mind with..... your own mind!" GOOD! GOOD! GOOD! Yes you can! YOU CAN! Do! Please come!
Hey, what a great holiday gift idea! Many former students have sent their moms, dads, and/or grandparents to the class! It is an excellent mind-blow for anyone!
YES please pass this along to anyone that could use a "right on!" experience!
THANK YOU +++
Sincerely,
Betty Bong Secretary, Writing the Unthinkable

Uninked in Phoenix:
Updated May 6, 2007
UnInked: Paintings, Sculptures and Graphic Works by Five Cartoonists
Five of the finest cartoonists currently working are also, not surprisingly, five of cartooning’s finest artists. While the original ink-on-paper drawings which compose literary graphic novels and comic strips are generally only one step in the arduous process of creating a visual book, they are not necessarily intended to be seen as finished works in and of themselves. This exhibit chooses instead to focus on those artists whose work intentionally already extends beyond the page: rarely-seen drawings, paintings, lithographs, and sculptures which develop the extensive narrative worlds and ideas which every cartoonist has spent years, and in some cases, lifetimes, developing. The prolific artists presented — Kim Deitch, Jerry Moriarty, Gary Panter, Ron Regé, Jr. and Seth — have all devoted themselves to their imaginative work with an multifarious intensity at a time when a great deal of contemporary art mines its so-called visual “source material” from narrative popular culture but then chooses to blur or disregard its story content before enlarging it onto a gallery wall. By contrast, the work by these five artists — for whom storytelling is second nature — is unusually original, direct and full of life.
The exhibit runs from April 21st through August 19th, 2007 at the Phoenix Art Musuem, 1625 North Central Avenue, Phoenix, Arizona (602 257-1222). A 112 page full-color hardcover catalog edited and designed by the show’s curator,Chris Ware, picturing works from the exhibit as well as selected samples of each artists’ published work, will be available in mid-July from the museum’s store.

Marguerite Abouet at the PEN Festival in NYC
Updated April 5, 2007
The writer behind Aya appears on multiple panels at this year's PEN Festival:
Wednesday, April 25th "At Home in Europe"
Where: Hemmerdinger Hall at NYU: 100 Washington Square East What time: 3–4:30 p.m.
With Marguerite Abouet, Geert Mak, Zafer Şenocak, Janne Teller, Ilija Trojanow; moderated by Jane Kramer of The New Yorker
Free and open to the public. No reservations.
Co-sponsored by the NYU Creative Writing Program
Over the last decade, Europe has undergone some of the most radical changes in its recent history. These writers take a look at the impact of multiculturalism, migration, and economic and other social shifts, and discuss their implications for the stability of individual countries and the creation of a broader European identity. Ilija Trojanow has undertaken a reverse migration of sorts, leaving Europe to settle in various places in sub-Saharan Africa and then chronicling many of these far-flung corners of the world. Geert Mak is a journalist, historian, and author of the forthcoming In Europe: A Journey Through the Twentieth Century. While working as a macroeconomist for the United Nations, Janne Teller lived in Dar-es-Salaam, Maputo, Brussels, and New York and much of her writing focuses on European and multicultural identity. Zafer Şenocak has written widely on the issues of diversity in Germany, the Turkish diaspora, and the short distances and large fears of a globalizing Europe. Marguerite Abouet left Abidjan, Ivory Coast at the age of 12 to study in France. Her graphic novel Aya details the promising, prosperous period of the 1970s in Ivory Coast.
Thursday, April 26th "Conversation: Neil Gaiman & Marguerite Abouet, with Sean Wilsey"
Where: 37 Arts: 450 West 37th St. What time: 6–7 p.m.
Tickets: $15/$10 PEN Members Purchase tickets from Ticketmaster: www.ticketmaster.com or (212) 307-4100
Neil Gaiman has written novels, screenplays, children’s books, and comics (before they became known as graphic novels). His work has been widely praised, and his Sandman series is one of the most highly regarded collections in the world of comics. Marguerite Abouet was born in Ivory Coast in 1971 and now lives outside of Paris. Her graphic novel Aya chronicles growing up in a working-class neighborhood in Abidjan during a brief period of postcolonial calm. Sean Wilsey is an editor-at-large at McSweeney’s and author of the memoir Oh the Glory of It All. Together, they will discuss truth, imagination, and all things graphic.
Friday, April 27th "Words Without Borders: Every Day in Africa"
Where: Instituto Cervantes New York: 211–215 East 49th St. What time: 6–7:30 p.m.
With Marguerite Abouet, Abdulrazak Gurnah, Yasmina Khadra, Uzodinma Iweala; moderated by Dedi Felman
Free and open to the public. No reservations.
Co-sponsored by Instituto Cervantes New York and the Consulate General of Spain
Words Without Borders, the online magazine for international literature, is a partner in The Center for Literary Translation at Columbia University.
Americans’ exposure to Africa is mostly through press coverage focused on current events, with a bias toward the sensational and tragic. This discussion will offer a glimpse into the richness of the literary voices from Africa: these writers will talk about their work, the traditions they draw on, their styles and literary choices, and their tremendously diverse accomplishments.
