Seth exhibit at Adam Baumgold Gallery - Oct 12 to Nov 23!
Updated September 20, 2011
SETH THE GREAT NORTHERN BROTHERHOOD OF CANADIAN CARTOONISTS
October 12 – November 23, 2011
Adam Baumgold Gallery presents an exhibition by Seth of work from his new book THE GREAT NORTHERN BROTHERHOOD OF CANADIAN CARTOONISTS that will premiere at the gallery. The exhibition will include the complete set of 100 drawings, paintings on paper, as well as related artifacts and ephemera.
In THE GREAT NORTHERN BROTHERHOOD OF CANADIAN CARTOONISTS, Seth offers a rich and varied study of Canadian cartoonists, both real and fictional. This group of drawings celebrates nearly every kind of cartoon – newspaper strips, nickel-backs, gags, comic books, political satire, accordion books, and graphic novels – but is bound together by his own carefully-crafted style. Seth uses bold black lines and gray ink washes, occasionally with watercolor, to create his dramatically lit scenes. As the title suggests, the series has a distinctly Canadian flavor; mounted police, igloos, dog-sleds, pine trees, bears, and British soldiers all make appearances.
The gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday 11:00 - 5:30 P.M. A preview of the exhibition can be viewed at www.adambaumgoldgallery.com.

Sheila Heti and LEANNE SHAPTON in conversation at the D&Q Library, October 28th
Updated October 21, 2010
Sheila Heti and Leanne Shapton in conversation
Thursday, October 28th 7:00 PM Librairie Drawn & Quarterly Bookstore 211 Bernard West, Montreal, QC
Sheila Heti lives in Toronto, Canada, where she writes books and conducts interviews. She is the author of the story collection THE MIDDLE STORIES, the novel TICKNOR and she will be launching HOW SHOULD A PERSON BE?, a bold interrogation into the possibility of a beautiful life. A novel of many identities, it is an autobiography of the mind, a postmodern self-help book, and a (mostly) fictionalized portrait of the artist as a young woman -- of two such artists, in fact.
Leanne Shapton is an illustrator, author and publisher based in New York City. She published WAS SHE PRETTY? in November 2008 and IMPORTANT ARTIFACTS AND PERSONAL PROPERTY FROM THE COLLECTION OF LENORE DOOLAN AND HAROLD MORRIS INCLUDING BOOKS, STREET FASHION AND JEWELRY, in February 2009. She will be launching a book of paintings for Drawn and Quarterly called NATIVE TREES OF CANADA.

LYNDA BARRY at the SCHOOL OF ART INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO, November 15th
Updated October 21, 2010
SCHOOL OF THE ART INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO BRINGS ACCLAIMED AUTHOR AND CARTOONIST LYNDA BARRY TO CHICAGO NOV. 15 FOR SPECIAL VISITING ARTIST PRESENTATION
Free Event presented in SAIC Columbus Auditorium Barry to sign copies of her newest book, “Picture This” Following Presentation
Chicago, IL—The School of the Art Institute of Chicago brings Lynda Barry, the inimitable creator of “Ernie Pook’s Comeek,” to Chicago Monday, Nov. 15 at 6 p.m. as part of its ongoing Visiting Artist Program. At the event, Barry will do a slide show presentation, as well as discuss her influences, creative process, and career, before signing copies of her newest book, “Picture This,” which will be officially released by Drawn & Quarterly Nov. 9, 2010. The event is free and open to the public, and will be presented at the SAIC Columbus Auditorium, 280 S. Columbus Drive. Reservations are not required. Seating is limited and available on a first come, first served basis.
In the richly illustrated “Picture This,” Barry asks the questions “Why do we stop drawing?” and “Why do we start?” It features the return of Barry's most beloved character, Marlys, and introduces a new one, the Nearsighted Monkey. Guest water colorist Kevin Kawula contributed to the book. Copies of “Picture This” will be available for purchase at the event. ($30.95; credit cards only).
Barry is perhaps best known as one of the most successful non-mainstream American cartoonists, although she also works as a painter, writer, illustrator, playwright, editor, commentator, and teacher. In her works, Barry explores the depths of the inner and outer realms of creation and imagination, where play can be serious, monsters have purpose, and not knowing is an answer unto itself. Her cartoons were first published by the Chicago Reader, and went on to be syndicated widely for more than two decades before she stopped drawing them in 2008. She lived in Chicago for several years before returning to her native Wisconsin. Widely praised, her works include the bestselling and acclaimed “What It Is,” which received the Eisner Award for Best Reality Based Graphic Novel and the R.R. Donnelly Award for highest literary achievement by a Wisconsin author; and “The Good Times are Killing Me,” which was adapted into an off-Broadway musical.
Praising Barry’s “What It Is,” Julia Keller of the Chicago Tribune wrote “In her new book, ‘What It Is’ (Drawn & Quarterly), Barry spins around and around and bumps into so many touchstones that you get dizzy right along with her. It's a heavenly hodgepodge of philosophical speculations, biographical musings, funny observations, pointed interrogations and poignant recollections, all wrapped up in the funky, colorful, eclectic artwork that has made the former Chicago resident famous.”
“Picture This” and “What It Is” are both based on Barry’s creative workshop "Writing the Unthinkable" which she teaches all over North America.

LA Weekly promotes LYNDA BARRY at Skylight Books, October 19th
Updated October 19, 2010
Lynda Barry Tue., October 19, 7:30pm Skylight Books 1818 N. Vermont Ave. L.A., CA 90027
How much do I love Lynda Barry? Enough that I once dressed up as her for my sixth-grade Admirable Women project, even though the mass of Harriet Tubmans and Helen Kellers shot puzzled glances at my clomping boots and lopsided glasses. I had already discarded the sterile characters from young-adult novels for Freddie, Arna and especially Marlys — the characters in Barry's continuing Ernie Pook's Comeek — who epitomized the geeky, bug-loving, notebook-filling agony of childhood. Her drawing style seemed a little messy at first, but it also looked like my favorite paintings in the Outside Art exhibitions my parents were always dragging me to, and her books are so lovely and so true. At Skylight Barry will discuss and sign her new book, Picture This: The Nearsighted Monkey Book, a sequel to What It Is, which is kind of a cross between an illustrated memoir and a writing manual. You should be there.

Upcoming DENYS WORTMAN exhibit at the Museum of the City of New York
Updated October 5, 2010
Denys Wortman Rediscovered: Drawings for the World-Telegram and Sun, 1930-1953 Nov 19 through Mar 20
Denys Wortman Rediscovered: Drawings for the World-Telegram and Sun, 1930-1953 is an exhibition of original cartoon drawings made for the World-Telegram and Sun illustrating episodes of everyday life in New York City. Formally trained in art at the New York School of Fine and Applied Art under the tutelage of Robert Henri and Kenneth Hayes Miller, Wortman was among a new generation of social realists who believed in the artistic possibilities of modern urban life as a creative subject. The benches at Union Square, the tenement rooftops on the Lower East Side, and the stifling garment industry sweatshops provided the backdrops for his drawings that, in combination with Wortman’s colorful characters, instill a sense of place that was distinctly “New York.” Although Denys Wortman was a renowned artist during his lifetime, today his work is largely forgotten. This exhibition celebrates an artist who gave readers a daily glimpse into the causes and concerns of ordinary people during a tumultuous time in New York City’s history. His cartoons illustrate the complex social impact of the economic roller coaster that was the Roaring Twenties, the Great Depression and the eventual recovery of the Post-War years. Wortman’s city is filled with working class men and women trying to survive and struggling to get ahead, facing the joys and fears of modern urban life.

Giant Robot hosts group show featuring MARC BELL in San Francisco this fall
Updated September 29, 2010
Saturday, October 16 · 6:30pm - 10:00pm Giant Robot San Francisco 437 East 9th Street San Francisco, CA
Giant Robot is proud to host Removable Pants, a group art show featuring new work by Marc Bell, Jason Mclean, and Peter Thompson.
Marc Bell was born in London, Ontario and has befuddled and bemused his readers for over a decade. He is the author of Shrimpy and Paul and Friends and his work has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Vice, and numerous forward-thinking comics anthologies (such as Kramers Ergot, and The Ganzfeld). In 2009, Montreal's Drawn & Quarterly published his most recent book, Hot Potatoe. When Bell isn't making arty cartoons, he makes cartoony (or folky) fine art and is represented by the Adam Baumgold Gallery in New York.
Also born in London, Ontario, Jason McLean first studied art at the H. B. Beal Art program, going on to graduate from the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in 1997. His diverse practice has included drawing, sculpture, installation, sound performance, and mail art. Recently, after close to 20 years of developing his practice in Vancouver, McLean moved back to Toronto to pursue a larger range of artistic possibilities. "I do like to deface things," he says. "Some people think it's destructive, but I think I'm giving new life to old stuff, and who knows--down the road, someone else might draw over something I worked on, adding even another life to it."
Canadian doodling master Peter Thompson's angular, detailed, artfully constructed doodles have been compared to underground godfather R. Crumb and sometimes-collaborator Marc Bell for sheer dizzying inventiveness. Key examples of his works include abstract, surreal drawings of elephant characters that morph into human faces and oblique text (The Chronicles of Lucky Ello) and deconstructed treatments of Canadian haircuts (in collaboration with James Kirkpatrick).
For this show, Bell, McLean, and Thompson will be showing fresh solo work as well as brand-new collaborations.
An opening reception will take place on 6:30 - 10:00 PM on Saturday, October 16.

CHRIS WARE ACME NOVELTY LIBRARY 20 exhibit at Adam Baumgold Gallery
Updated September 16, 2010
The ACME Novelty Library #20
September 16 - October 23, 2010
Adam Baumgold Gallery presents original drawings by Chris Ware from his new periodical The ACME Novelty Library 20, to premiere at the gallery from September 16 through October 23, 2010. The exhibition will feature the complete drawings for The ACME Novelty Library 20 (serialized in Zadie Smith's "The Book of Other People" and The Virginia Quarterly Review) which is also a contributing chapter to one of his ongoing graphic novels, "Rusty Brown." In addition, the exhibition will include a handful of drawings from proposed ill-fated (and sated) television projects, "The ACME Novelty Network," and "Quimby the Mouse," a short executed with animator John Kuramoto for "This American Life."
This installment of the "ACME Novelty Library" chronicles the life of Jordan Wellington Lint (b.1958) from cradle to grave, each year of Lint's life represented by a few representative seconds of consciousness per page. As he grows from child to sullen teen to angry young man to repressed upstanding citizen - and moves towards his inevitable end - Lint adapts to his own social advantages, personal mistakes and the lies he tells himself to somehow end up feeling pretty okay about things. Ware approximates Lint's inner life at every stage through a muddled stream of overlaid thoughts, personal symbols and mislaid memories, providing insight into the mind of a bemused father, ineffectual businessman and aspiring rock musician.
The gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday 11:00 to 5:30 P.M. For additional information please contact Adam Baumgold at (212)861-7338 or at abaumgold@aol.com.

Lynda Barry in St Louis!
Updated July 7, 2008
Monday, August 25th 7:00PM - 8:30PM St. Louis Public Library
Graphic novelist Lynda Barry will discuss and sign her new book, What It Is. How do objects summon memories? What do real images feel like? What It Is demonstrates a tried-and-true creative method that is playful, powerful, and accessible to anyone with an inquisitive wish to write or to remember. Each page of What It Is is a full-color collage that is not only a gentle guide to this process but an invigorating example of the ordinary being extraordinary. Lynda Barry has worked as a painter, cartoonist, writer, illustrator, playwright, editor, commentator and teacher and found they are very much alike. She is the inimitable creator behind the syndicated strip Ernie Pook's Comeek featuring the incomparable Marlys and Freddy, as well as the books One! Hundred! Demons!, The! Greatest! of! Marlys!, Cruddy: An Illustrated Novel, and Naked Ladies! Naked Ladies! Naked Ladies!. Lynda studied at Evergreen State College, where she became good friends with Simpsons creator Matt Groening. Her work has been widely praised, and her book The Good Times are Killing Me--also adapted as an off-Broadway musical--won the Washington State Governor's Award. Lynda explores the depths of the inner and outer realms of creation and imagination, where play can be serious, monsters have purpose, and not knowing is an answer unto itself. Star Clipper Comics will provide books for sale.

CHRIS WARE Drawings for New York Periodicals February 1 - March 15, 2008 Opening Reception: Friday, February 1st, 6-8 PM
Adam Baumgold Gallery presents a recent series of original comic drawings by Chris Ware Drawings For New York Periodicals, from February 1 through March 15, 2008. The 40 drawings in the exhibition include the complete 30 weekly drawings comprising one chapter of the in-progress book “Building Stories” which inaugurated the “Funny Pages” in The New York Times Sunday magazine in 2005. In addition, the exhibition will feature the four different Thanksgiving cover drawings that were published simultaneously by The New Yorker in 2006 as well as the fifth cover that was released only online by The New Yorker. Other drawings by Chris Ware done specifically for the New Yorker will also appear in the exhibition.
The 30 “Building Stories” drawings focus on one day, one hour each, in the lives of the inhabitants of the three floors of a Chicago apartment building. Their thoughts, ambitions, day dreams, second guesses, and real-life interactions are scrutinized and in some cases amplified into seemingly monumental events.
The drawings for The New Yorker Thanksgiving issue combine scenes from the present and the past that comment on holidays, sustenance and war. Chris Ware was born in Omaha, Nebraska in 1967. He is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin and also attended The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He is the author of "Jimmy Corrigan – the Smartest Kid on Earth" (Pantheon Books, 2000) which received the Guardian First Book Award in 2001 and the American Book Award in 2000. His is also the author of the irregular periodical “The Acme Novelty Library” (Volume #1 - #18) Chris Ware’s books “Quimby the Mouse” and "The ACME Novelty Datebook" (Volume 1), were released in 2003 and in 2004. He was the recipient of the Eisner and Harvey Comic book awards, in 1994 and 2004, the "L'Alph Art" award in 2003, and a United States Artists "Hoi" Fellowship in 2007.
Chris Ware’s “The ACME Novelty Library #18” (“Building Stories”) and "The ACME Novelty Datebook" (Volume Two) as well as the portfolio of prints related to The New Yorker Thanksgiving covers (“The ACME Novelty Library #18.5”) all were released in late 2007.
Chris Ware’s work was included in the Whitney Biennial in 2002, as well as in the traveling exhibition MASTERS of American Comics in 2005-6 that opened at MOCA and the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles. Chris Ware had a retrospective exhibition at The Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago in 2006, and in 2007 at the Sheldon Memorial Gallery in Lincoln, Nebraska. Chris Ware lives and works in Oak Park, Illinois.
The gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday 11:00 to 5:30 P.M. For additional information please contact Adam Baumgold at (212)861-7338 or at abaumgold@aol.com. A preview of the exhibition can be viewed at adambaumgoldgallery

An evening with James Sturm: Thursday, October 11
Updated October 3, 2007
His new book, modestly titled James Sturm's America, has just been published. The book is the definitive collection of his American history stories.
Please stop by Elixir located in White River Junction at 188 S. Main Street (802.281-7009). The signing is from 6-8pm but if enough people buy James a drink he may be there longer (luckily he lives within walking distance)! He'll have his pens on hand and will adorn your book with some original artwork. If you haven't been to Elixir it's worth checking out, it's a swank tapas/martini bar in the beautifully refurbished freight house.
The wonderfully independently owned Norwich Bookstore will be on hand to sell the books. And, if you want to buy a signed book but can not make it Thursday night, call the Norwich Bookstore (802-649-1114) and reserve a copy. He will happily inscribe it for you.
ps: Blurbs!
"Original and fascinating." -- Garry Trudeau
"James Sturm's graphic narratives make us re-imagine our shared history. This is historical fiction at its best." -- Russell Banks
"Sturm's AMERICA is the one glimpsed through the holes in the flag: rooted, grim and enduring. His line of his drawings has a pure grain like that of the voice in William Carlos Williams' epic poem PATERSON, or the singers on Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music. Fables like these are an antidote to cultural amnesia." -- Jonathan Lethem

WRITING the UNTHINKABLE: new CHICAGO class and MySpace page
Updated October 2, 2007
Betty Bong is sitting here at the kitchen table with laptop and limeade -- to tell you about our new MySpace page: http://www.myspace.com/writingtheunthinkable
Please check it out for class bulletins and new Lynda Barry artwork!
AND we're also proud to announce the next LYNDA BARRY "WRITING the UNTHINKABLE" class -- happening in CHICAGO on JANUARY 5th & 6th, Saturday and Sunday, 2008!
Once again -- this class has only 45 seats! Tuition is only $200.00 for the two-day affair!
ENROLLMENT is oh-so EASY! Simply reply to me, Betty Bong, at this address: fromthedeskofmarlys@yahoo.com-- and we will give you the simple direct-to-Lynda check/money-order payment instructions! This thwarts The Man and his eBay fees! Yeah! Twart the Man!
But if you need to enroll via PayPal, that is still cool! You can visit our eBay store http://stores.ebay.com/Shop-Super-Marlys
Please note: IF YOU ENROLL via Ebay, WE MUST HAVE YOUR CURRENT ACTIVE EMAIL ADDRESS! We will need to contact you with class information, etc. – VERY IMPORTANT! Otherwise it will be so very sad! Don't be sad!
Here's the complete class scoop:
Do you wish you could WRITE? Do you wish you had a better MEMORY? Do you want to make STORIES but are too confused about how to even start? DO YOU WANT A SEAT IN THE TWO-DAY WRITING CLASS TAUGHT BY LYNDA BARRY? The schedule was specifically designed for night owls and sleepy heads! Check out the late start hours! NOON to 6pm!
THIS IS AN INTENSIVE WRITING CLASS! It's not a social situation at all! Actually, you can be completely anonymous in this class! You don't have to be cool! Your clothes can be square! You don't have to read aloud or talk to anyone if you don't want to! You don't even have to make eye contact! And you don't have to be a writer to be part of it! In fact, this is a class that works especially well for 'non-writers' like bartenders, janitors, office workers, hairdressers and anyone who has given up on 'being a writer' but still wonders what it might be like to write. Open to ALL PEOPLE!
Lynda teaches a specific way of working she learned from her teacher, Marilyn Frasca, in the late 1970's and has used ever since. She says it will work for anyone who has any kind of curiosity about writing or remembering -- especially people who have always wanted to write but have no idea how to even begin.
BE ADVISED! IT'S GOING TO BE TWO DAYS OF INTENSE CONCENTRATION AND HARD WORK! It is not jive! It is for real! (It is also pretty fun too, but not necessarily in a social way!)
Can you dig that? If so, we can dig YOU! All you'll need is about 100 sheets of notebook paper, a three-ring binder (no other kind of paper set-up will work for this class) and a couple of your favorite pens. All students must figure out their own transportation and lodging. We'll tell you where the classroom is located and all other details when we confirm your reservation!
Come to Chicago! Come to Lynda's writing class! Class monitor Kelly Hogan describes the class as a way to "Blow your mind with..... your own mind!" GOOD! GOOD! GOOD! Yes you can! YOU CAN! Do! Please come!
Hey, what a great holiday gift idea! Many former students have sent their moms, dads, and/or grandparents to the class! It is an excellent mind-blow for anyone!
YES please pass this along to anyone that could use a "right on!" experience!
THANK YOU +++
Sincerely,
Betty Bong Secretary, Writing the Unthinkable

Uninked in Phoenix:
Updated May 6, 2007
UnInked: Paintings, Sculptures and Graphic Works by Five Cartoonists
Five of the finest cartoonists currently working are also, not surprisingly, five of cartooning’s finest artists. While the original ink-on-paper drawings which compose literary graphic novels and comic strips are generally only one step in the arduous process of creating a visual book, they are not necessarily intended to be seen as finished works in and of themselves. This exhibit chooses instead to focus on those artists whose work intentionally already extends beyond the page: rarely-seen drawings, paintings, lithographs, and sculptures which develop the extensive narrative worlds and ideas which every cartoonist has spent years, and in some cases, lifetimes, developing. The prolific artists presented — Kim Deitch, Jerry Moriarty, Gary Panter, Ron Regé, Jr. and Seth — have all devoted themselves to their imaginative work with an multifarious intensity at a time when a great deal of contemporary art mines its so-called visual “source material” from narrative popular culture but then chooses to blur or disregard its story content before enlarging it onto a gallery wall. By contrast, the work by these five artists — for whom storytelling is second nature — is unusually original, direct and full of life.
The exhibit runs from April 21st through August 19th, 2007 at the Phoenix Art Musuem, 1625 North Central Avenue, Phoenix, Arizona (602 257-1222). A 112 page full-color hardcover catalog edited and designed by the show’s curator,Chris Ware, picturing works from the exhibit as well as selected samples of each artists’ published work, will be available in mid-July from the museum’s store.

Marguerite Abouet at the PEN Festival in NYC
Updated April 5, 2007
The writer behind Aya appears on multiple panels at this year's PEN Festival:
Wednesday, April 25th "At Home in Europe"
Where: Hemmerdinger Hall at NYU: 100 Washington Square East What time: 3–4:30 p.m.
With Marguerite Abouet, Geert Mak, Zafer Şenocak, Janne Teller, Ilija Trojanow; moderated by Jane Kramer of The New Yorker
Free and open to the public. No reservations.
Co-sponsored by the NYU Creative Writing Program
Over the last decade, Europe has undergone some of the most radical changes in its recent history. These writers take a look at the impact of multiculturalism, migration, and economic and other social shifts, and discuss their implications for the stability of individual countries and the creation of a broader European identity. Ilija Trojanow has undertaken a reverse migration of sorts, leaving Europe to settle in various places in sub-Saharan Africa and then chronicling many of these far-flung corners of the world. Geert Mak is a journalist, historian, and author of the forthcoming In Europe: A Journey Through the Twentieth Century. While working as a macroeconomist for the United Nations, Janne Teller lived in Dar-es-Salaam, Maputo, Brussels, and New York and much of her writing focuses on European and multicultural identity. Zafer Şenocak has written widely on the issues of diversity in Germany, the Turkish diaspora, and the short distances and large fears of a globalizing Europe. Marguerite Abouet left Abidjan, Ivory Coast at the age of 12 to study in France. Her graphic novel Aya details the promising, prosperous period of the 1970s in Ivory Coast.
Thursday, April 26th "Conversation: Neil Gaiman & Marguerite Abouet, with Sean Wilsey"
Where: 37 Arts: 450 West 37th St. What time: 6–7 p.m.
Tickets: $15/$10 PEN Members Purchase tickets from Ticketmaster: www.ticketmaster.com or (212) 307-4100
Neil Gaiman has written novels, screenplays, children’s books, and comics (before they became known as graphic novels). His work has been widely praised, and his Sandman series is one of the most highly regarded collections in the world of comics. Marguerite Abouet was born in Ivory Coast in 1971 and now lives outside of Paris. Her graphic novel Aya chronicles growing up in a working-class neighborhood in Abidjan during a brief period of postcolonial calm. Sean Wilsey is an editor-at-large at McSweeney’s and author of the memoir Oh the Glory of It All. Together, they will discuss truth, imagination, and all things graphic.
Friday, April 27th "Words Without Borders: Every Day in Africa"
Where: Instituto Cervantes New York: 211–215 East 49th St. What time: 6–7:30 p.m.
With Marguerite Abouet, Abdulrazak Gurnah, Yasmina Khadra, Uzodinma Iweala; moderated by Dedi Felman
Free and open to the public. No reservations.
Co-sponsored by Instituto Cervantes New York and the Consulate General of Spain
Words Without Borders, the online magazine for international literature, is a partner in The Center for Literary Translation at Columbia University.
Americans’ exposure to Africa is mostly through press coverage focused on current events, with a bias toward the sensational and tragic. This discussion will offer a glimpse into the richness of the literary voices from Africa: these writers will talk about their work, the traditions they draw on, their styles and literary choices, and their tremendously diverse accomplishments.

Adrian Tomine launches Optic Nerve #11
Updated March 29, 2007
OPTIC NERVE #11 by ADRIAN TOMINE
Drawn & Quarterly and Rocketship present: a book launch and signing with Adrian Tomine
SATURDAY, MARCH 31st @ 8:00 PM Rocketship, 208 Smith Street, Brooklyn, NY
http://drawnandquarterly.com http://rocketshipstore.blogspot.com
ABOUT OPTIC NERVE #11: In this long-awaited conclusion to Adrian Tomine's three-part epic, the story leaps across the country, taking place entirely in New York. All of protagonist Ben Tanaka's worst (and most amusing) traits are brought to the fore as his obsessive quest reaches a fever pitch. His best friend, Alice Kim, finds herself at an unexpected crossroads in her life, forcing her to make several life-altering decisions. But whatever happened to Ben's girlfriend, Miko Hayashi? That and many other answers are revealed as our protagonists walk and talk their way through the streets of Brooklyn and Manhattan, all delineated in Tomine's evocatively pristine style. Optic Nerve issues #9 to 11 are being collected into Tomine’s first long-form graphic novel, Shortcomings, due out in Fall 2007.
ABOUT ADRIAN TOMINE: Adrian Tomine is the critically acclaimed cartoonist of the comic book series Optic Nerve; the graphic novels 32 Stories, Sleepwalk and Summer Blonde; and the art book Scrapbook. He is also an illustrator for the New Yorker, Esquire, and Rolling Stone, and his stories have appeared in The Best American Nonrequired Reading and An Anthology of Graphic Fiction, Cartoons, and True Stories. A graduate of UC Berkeley, Tomine lives in Brooklyn, NY.

Steve Mumford Exhibit in Boston
Updated October 27, 2006
Baghdad and Beyond: Drawings by Steve Mumford September 8—November 19 , 2006 Koppelman Gallery
Opening Reception: Friday, September 8, 6:00–8:30pm Artist Talk and Reception: Thursday, November 2, 6:00pm Co-sponsored by the Jonathan M. Tisch College for Citizenship and Public Service; the Institute for Global Leadership; and the Tufts University Office of Alumni Relations
During four trips to Iraq in 2003 and 2004, and with journalistic credentials from the website artnet.com, Steve Mumford traveled with army units to Baghdad and seven other cities in Iraq, producing drawings and written accounts that were posted on the site. “Baghdad Journal” is now also in book form, published by Drawn & Quarterly in 2005. In 2006, Mumford spent three days at Brooke Army Medical Center drawing portraits of disabled Iraqi War veterans. These drawings are featured in the July issue of Harper’s Magazine.
A graduate of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston with a BFA in 1986 (he completed their Fifth-Year Certificate Program in 1987 and has an MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York), and a Boston native, Mumford revives a great tradition of combat art characterized by Winslow Homer’s Civil War paintings. The instantaneous and documentary nature of photo-journalism that defines most of our visuals of Iraq is replaced by lingering lapses of time that expressively capture mood and atmosphere more than precise events. Mumford strives to maintain a camera-like objectivity about the politics of the war while providing an artist’s humanistic view of the individuals engaged in that war.
The Tufts University Art Gallery exhibition will feature 41 watercolor and sepia drawings from the “Baghdad Journal” series and 8 watercolors from Mumford’s trip to Brooke Army Medical Center. These will be exhibited for the first time together and for the first time in Boston.
Kids in Zafariniya, Baghdad, Oct, 2004, scramble for candy tossed by soldiers from the Washington National Guard. This was a regular ritual on every patrol in this sector, anticipated by the kids, and tolerated by their parents, watercolor, 11 x 15", courtesy of Postmasters Gallery, New York, NY
