Linework NW is this weekend: PDX! Luke Ramsey and Lisa Hanawalt are in town!
Dear Portland: it ain't cool the way you get the tasty coffee, the early spring, the beautiful roses, and now a great comics show. The second annual Linework NW is this weekend and we have two of our finest L authors in town to celebrate: Luke Ramsey and Lisa Hanawalt!
On Friday night, April 17th, kick the weekend off right. Head down to the lovely book-and-art emporium Reading Frenzy (3628 N. Mississippi Ave.) at 7 pm: BC based illustrator and cartoonist Luke Ramsey will be giving a short talk, signing copies of Intelligent Sentient?, and launching an exhibition in their art space! On display will be original drawings and a dozen prints from the book.
If you're as fascinated by the book as we are, why not read a short Q&Q with Luke over on the Linework NW site? Or perhaps you're more interested in reviews, like Jake Austen's in the Chicago Tribune where he says, "Ramsey has crafted a wordless non-story that’s paradoxically one of the best reads of the year;" or Gareth Branwyn's for Boing Boing, where he calls Intelligent Sentient? a "psychoactive pictorial trip to another world."
And best of all, if you can't make it to Friday night's launch, while you should still be bummed out cuz you're missing out on a fantastic partay, you get a second chance on Saturday April 18th. Both Luke Ramsey and Lisa Hanawalt are exhibiting at the Linework NW festival proper! The show runs from noon to 8 pm in the Norse Hall (111 NE 11th Ave, Portland), and is free and open to the public! From 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm on Saturday, Lisa Hanawalt will also be the focus of a spotlight panel, moderated by Tom Spurgeon, in the Norse Hall's Lodge Room.
Please note: while the show runs both weekend days, you'll be sorely disappointed if you show up looking to get My Dirty Dumb Eyes or Intelligent Sentient? signed on Sunday, as Lisa and Luke are both Saturday-only exhibitors. So make sure you clear your Friday and Saturday schedules and get yourselves some comics!
For bonus points, check out this Q+A with Lisa Hanawalt on the Linework NW site:
If you were a dog, what tricks would you know?
I’m a dog in the year 2014:I play dead whenever I hear "BEYONCE" and I get back up when I hear “FLAWLESS.”
And for the rest of us, we'll just have to settle for the above Q+As and paging through our worn and loved copies of Intelligent Sentient? and My Dirty Dumb Eyes. Our consolation prize? This great Kathryn Calder video, drawn by Luke Ramsey. Have a great time at Linework y'all!
