I know what you're thinking: what what? There was a point when the Moomins were not a glorious family unit? There was a time Moomin's beloved Snorkmaiden was not on speaking terms with our hippo-like hero? It has to be seen to be believed!

Well now you can see it, folks! Moomin and Family Life, an early strip from legendary Finnish artist Tove Jansson's Moomin collection, finds our protagonist in the depths of despair, broke, sans home, sans family, and sans girlfriend. Overwhelmed, he decides he will simply walk into the ocean. But good fortune strikes when his long-lost family—Moominmamma and Moominpappa—save and find the son they thought had disappeared forever.

Moomin and Family Life is so gorgeously adept at showcasing the struggle and bittersweetness of parenthood. Moominpappa feels so much joy at having his son back to have adventures with but longs for the less anchored life his smaller family unit had provided. All Moominmamma wants is to go back to a quiet, family life with her son—providing all the things she was never able to while he was gone—but she must balance that with her desire to maintain her coupledom with Moominpappa.

It's all poignancy and beauty, as usual with Tove Jansson. You can find Moomin and Family Life at a bookstore near you, and relive a reunion that will make you shed a tiny tear and call your person to say hey, I love ya.

And while you're at it, pick up another Colour Moomin Book and relive all you favourite Moomin moments!
