The Holtz Center for Science & Technology Studies is pleased to announce that Lynda Barry has been selected as the winner of its 2014-5 Outreach Fellowship.  The annual fellowship awards $5,000 to a UW-Madison faculty or academic staff member to support an innovative outreach program in keeping with the Holtz Center’s mission to promote public engagement with questions concerning the relationship of society and culture with science, medicine and technology.

Barry, director of the Image Lab at the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery and Assistant Professor of Interdisciplinary Creativity will be using the fellowship to support two projects:  first, creating and publishing “Graphic Writing Inside Out: A Workbook” (GWIO); and second, disseminating new methods for understanding and representing scientific expertise through a series of public workshops. GWIO will be a comic-based instructional resource for innovative teaching, learning, and methodology practices relevant to elementary, secondary, undergraduate, and graduate education. Using GWIO, the IL will conduct a series of workshops for elementary, secondary, undergraduate, graduate students that promote hand-drawn explorations of objectivity and expressions of expertise. Both projects draw upon and publicly explore ideas from seminal scholarship from science, technology and society (STS) studies.
