In this week’s Illustrated PEN, Guest Editor Robert Kirby presents an excerpt from cartoonist John Porcellino’s From Lone Mountain. Porcellino recalls a mid-90s road trip from Denver to Kansas in a story called Scott County Memories.
Kirby writes: It’s always a cause for celebration when we get a new collection of comics culled from John Porcellino’s long-running zine, King-Cat. His latest, From Lone Mountain (Drawn & Quarterly), is no exception. The book chronicles Porcellino’s life in the mid-aughts, a time filled with restlessness, road trips, and upheaval. Through it all, Porcellino observed and recorded, capturing all the signs and wonders of life that inspired him to keep going, despite much turmoil. The story below, Scott County Memories, drawn in Porcellino’s instantly recognizable, magically minimal style, recalls a mid-90s road trip that ended with a little epiphany.
