Moomin: The Deluxe Lars Jansson Edition

Written and illustrated by Lars Jansson

This compendium, which brings together twenty stories from Finnish cartoonist Lars Jansson’s Moomin comic strips from the 1960’s and ’70’s, has great attractions for diehard Moomin fans (Lars inherited the strip from his sister Tove, the originator of Moomins). But how does it play out in the 2020’s? Light-heartedly critical and political in its time, some of its humour is now not quite so amusing. Yet at its best, the generosity and innocent sense of play characteristic of the Moomins and their friends has a strangely profound charm. “How nice!” declares Moominmamma when she discovers that an old friend of Moominpappa has stayed the night. “I’d better sweep the floor if you are going to sleep under the table, Mr. Wimsy.” The aplomb with which Moominmamma accepts all guests definitely has its place in the world.
